Ambrose Robert Coughlin, 95, passed away peacefully January 20, 2014 surrounded by family. He is survived by his daughters, Kathleen Loftus (Joseph), Patricia Coughlin, and daughter-in-law Maripat Coughlin (Timothy). He is also survived by grandchildren Mary Pat Sullivan, Mark Loftus, Anne Gilmore, Laura Payne, Jeanne Loftus; six great-grandchildren; and siblings Richard Coughlin (Helen), Mary Schmitz (Don) and Sally Miller.

He was preceded in death by wife Mary Reget Coughlin, son Timothy J. Coughlin, parents, Maurice and Lillian Blystad Coughlin, brothers Donald, Bernard, John, and sisters Helen and Jane.

Ambrose was born in La Crosse March 20, 1918, grew up on the north side, attended St. James Elementary School, Aquinas High School, and La Crosse Vocational School (now WTC). Ambrose was the quarterback on the Aquinas football team; he and his brothers were star hockey players.

Ambrose and Mary Agnes Reget were married on November 29, 1941 at St. Joseph Cathedral. He was in the US Army from 1943-1946, reaching the rank of Master Sargeant. He was an accountant and Assistant Secretary Treasurer for Gateway Transportation Company for 42 years and always said he was lucky to work at something he loved. His greatest loves, however, were his wife and family.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, January 24, 2014, in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1333 So., 13th St., La Crosse, Wis. Msgr. Bernard McGarty will officiate with entombment with military rites by the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52, in the St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum in the Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse, Wis. Family and friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 6:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 5:30 PM at the Blaschke & Schneider Funeral Home, 1501 West Ave. So., La Crosse, Wis. Family and friends may also call from 9:30 AM until the time of Mass in church on Friday.

Memorial donations may be made to Feed My Starving Children, WAFER Food Pantry, or charity of donor’s choice.
