Arthur (Art) G. Barbier, MD, 79, of La Crosse, WI, died peacefully on Aug. 22, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Chicago, IL on July 21, 1936 to Gerhard and Paula (Ernst) Barbier. Art and Kim were married on July 18, 1964 in Saigon, Vietnam.

Art dedicated his life in Love and Service to God, his beloved family, friends, and the community. He served generously and compassionately as a physician for over 30 years at St. Francis Medical Center, Gundersen Lutheran Health System, and the VA Hospital in Tomah, WI. He also served his country in Vietnam and Gulf War I, retiring as a Lt. Colonel in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army.

After retirement he continued his roles of helping and serving people in his beloved community. Art cherished his time and involvement with the Church, the Aquinas Schools, and the La Crosse Community.

Art is survived by his wife of 51 years, Kim, and their 3 children: Louise of Kansas City, MO; Gary of Denver, CO; and Yvonne of Boston, MA.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gerhard and Paula, his sister Louise, stepmother Agnes, and parents-in-law Anthony and Anna Do.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Catholic Relief Services; Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, of La Crosse; Diocese of La Crosse Seminarians; and the Monastery of Christ in the Desert, in Abiquiu, NM.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday Aug 29, 2015, in St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral, 530 Main St., La Crosse. The very Rev. Msgr. Charles D. Stoetzel will preside. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at the Cathedral, on Friday Aug. 28, 2015 with a Vigil Service starting at 4:00 and a Rosary Service starting at 6:45. Burial will be held with Military Honors by the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Family and friends may also visit from 9:30 AM until the time of Mass at the Cathedral Church on Saturday morning.
