Bernard "Bernie" E. Capaul

March 27, 1940 — November 8, 2018

Bernard “Bernie” Edward Capaul (78) of Prairie du Chien, Wis., died peacefully in his sleep November 8, 2018, after a year of declining health.

Bernie was born March 27, 1940, to John Joseph and Anna (Clements) Capaul in Black River Falls, Wis.   He grew up on the family’s farm in Alma Center and graduated Alma Center High School. He worked in food service for many years before opening his own restaurant in Marshfield, Wis. His generosity to the hungry and those in need was routine. Bernie valued hard work and an honest day’s effort and appreciated those who came to assist him with various needs in his later years when he lived in Stokke Tower, La Crosse, Wis. and then Prairie du Chien. He valued his faith and membership at Cathedral of St. Joseph parish in La Crosse, but also could readily raise a pint to toast a birthday, or ball game, or life-long or newly-formed friendship. We will miss his dry sense of humor!

He is survived by sisters Francis Hayes of Andalusia, Ill; Jeannette Bohac of Hickston, WI, JoAnne (John) Schroeder of Alma Center, Wis., Elizabeth (Gary) O’Brien of Minneapolis, Minn., sister-in-law Jeannine Capaul of Alma Center Wis., many nieces and nephews, his guardians Christopher and Clare Ruff, caretaker Judy Doll, friends and fellow parishioners.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his only brother Robert Capaul, his sister Alice Miller of Poplar Bluff, Mich., and his brothers-in-law Frank Hayes, Donald Bohac, and Bill Miller.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, November 16, 2018, at 10:30 am in the Marian Chapel of the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman, 530 Main Street, La Crosse, Wis. Friends and family are encouraged to greet the family during a time of visitation 1 hour prior to Mass. Interment will be at East Lawn Cemetery in Alma Center, Wis.

Thanks are offered to the staff of Gundersen Lutheran Health Care for their caring medical support to Bernie over the years.
