I was "Smitty's" platoon leader, and was there to witness his heroism. Pat commanded the lead (scout) tank because he was such a leader and always had a "level head". Pat was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions (DSC is next to the Congressional Medal of Honor). When Pat's tank was hit with FOUR rockets (and caught fire with ammunition exploding) - wounding Pat - he went back into the tank to pull out three of his men. You will probably never hear of this, because Pat was humble. It was my honor to know Pat during his service in Vietnam. He saved many other's lives.

I have so many fond memories of Pat, Emil and Dora. My life was richer for having known them. V/R Ray

As a kid, I remember watching Pat wrestle on one of Logan High School's first wrestling teams. Pat was a big strong high schooler who won alot more than he lost. A lot of the wrestlers at that time didn't have a lot of technique and Pat won because of his strength and the size of his heart. Sounds like he had a great and rewarding life and he made the most of his talents. God Bless Mr. Smith and his family.

Jan ~ We are so very sorry about the unexpected and untimely passing of Pat. There are no words adequate at a time like this that makes your loss any less painful, but please know that you are in our prayers, and are a phone call or short walk away if you need anything. We will miss seeing Pat sitting out on his bucket on the dock fishing.

My condolences to the family. I was the manager of the Lacrosse Footwear Outlet for many years, and met Pat a number of times across the street from the store and in the store. Great guy! As a fellow Vietnam veteran, my hat is off to Pat for his tremendous service in Vietnam!! I was totally impressed when I read his obit. A real credit to his country. God bless you Pat!
