Father David A. Ziegelmaier, at the age of 84 and a priest for 54 years, died on Friday, October 10, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health System-Franciscan Healthcare in La Crosse.

Father Ziegelmaier was born on December 27, 1929, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to Francis and Mary (née Schmelzer) Ziegelmaier.  He attended Saint Joseph Elementary School and Aquinas High School, both in La Crosse; Saint Lawrence Seminary in Mount Calvary, Wisconsin; Holy Cross Seminary in La Crosse; and Mount St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa.  He was ordained on May 14, 1960, at Holy Cross Seminary by the Most Reverend John P. Treacy, Bishop of La Crosse.

Father Ziegelmaier`s first assignment following ordination was as assistant to Father Anthony Fischer at Saint Anne Parish, Wausau, on June 28, 1960.  He was then appointed assistant to Father Daniel O`Reilly at Immaculate Conception Parish, Eau Claire, in 1963; and as assistant to Monsignor Alphonse Schuh at Saint John the Baptist Parish and assistant chaplain at Saint Joseph Hospital, both in Marshfield, in 1964.  From June 1965 until January 1973 he served as a chaplain in the United States Army.  After returning to the diocese, Father Ziegelmaier was appointed pastor of Saint Joseph Parish, Fairview, and administrator Saint John Cantius Mission, Fairchild, on January 24, 1973.  On July 1, 1980, Father Ziegelmaier was appointed pastor of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, Big River, and administrator of Saint Martin Mission, Cherma.  During this time the new rectory was built.  On April 6, 1989, Father Ziegelmaier was again appointed pastor of Saint Joseph Parish, Fairview, and Saint John Cantius Parish, Fairchild.  In 1992 he was also appointed pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish, Alma Center.  Father Ziegelmaier served as pastor of these three parishes until August 12, 2006, when he was granted the status of senior priest.

Father Ziegelmaier is survived by one sister, Mary (Robert) Hurtgen, of La Crosse; a sister-in-law, Margaret Ziegelmaier, of Antioch, Wisconsin; and nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers:  Francis, John, Gregory and Lawrence.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Marian Chapel of St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral, La Crosse, on Friday, October 17, at 10:30 AM, with burial to follow in the Catholic Cemetery.  Monsignor Michael Gorman, Vicar General of the Diocese of La Crosse, will be the main celebrant.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 16, from 4:30 to 7:00 PM, in the Cathedral Marian Chapel, with Evening Prayer from the Office of the Dead at 6:30; and on Friday morning from 9:30 until the time of the Mass.

The Diocese of La Crosse and the family are being assisted by the Blaschke & Schneider Funeral Homes in La Crosse.
