Revina Agnes Marcum

Revina “Jolly” Agnes (nee Jolivette) Marcum, age 95, of La Crosse, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of November 16, 2014.

Jolly was born on August 20, 1919, in the Town of French Island to Cleveland P. Jolivette and Genevieve M. Marcou Jolivette. She was the second of their nine children, their first daughter. Revina married George Lehrke in 1942; they divorced in 1974. She was happily married to Herbert Marcum from October 24, 1987, until his death on May 30, 2008.

Jolly was a lifelong resident of the La Crosse area, attending Aquinas High School and Onalaska High School. She pursued and achieved a degree from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in elementary education. During the 1960’s her graduate work was divided between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse from which she earned a master’s degree in audio-visual education.

Jolly taught school for forty-two years including twenty years at Hogan Elementary School and thirteen years as director of the Hintgen Elementary media center. The first nine years of her career were spent teaching various grades and they included a position as principal at the Elm Grove State Graded School before entering the La Crosse public school system. Jolly served as a cooperating teacher for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Viterbo University supervising many student teachers in her classroom.

Jolly was a charter member of St. Thomas More Church, Mary Mother of the Church parish, a member of the La Crosse Area Retired Teachers’ Association, past president of the Buffalo Retired Educator’s Association and a lifelong member of state and national education associations.

Jolly is survived by her sisters, Lillian Hofer of La Crescent and Mary J. Larson Ekern of La Crosse; Rosella A. (Raymond) Reinl of Furlong, PA; Theresa J. Arntson of La Vegas, NV and her brother John Jolivette of West Salem. In addition to her siblings, Jolly’s survivors include twenty nieces and seventeen nephews and step-daughters Debra (Robert) Chudada and Luane Marcum.

Members of Jolly’s family who have passed on before her include her husband, Herbert Marcum and her parents, Cleveland and Genevieve Jolivette; brothers Theophile Jolivette and Jennings Jolivette, his wife Isabelle; Jolly’s sister, Helen Lehrke and her husband, Clarence Lehrke, their son, Daniel Lehrke; brothers-in-law Walter Ekern and Edward Hofer; sister-in-law, Joan Jolivette; nieces Sharon Larson Meier and Jean Hofer Justman; nephew, Michael Hofer.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 AM, Tuesday, November 25, 2014 in Mary, Mother of the Church Parish at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2006 Weston St., La Crosse, WI. Rev. Brian Konopa will officiate. According to her wishes, Revina’s remains will rest next to her husband, Herb in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. Family and friends may call from 10:30 AM until the time of Mass in the Church on Tuesday.
