Richard ‘Dick’ E. Volten, 86, of La Crosse, died Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Vernon Manor in Viroqua, WI. He was born on May 20, 1929 to Rudolph and Esther (Erickson) Volten in West Allis, WI. His father died in November of 1940. In June of 1941, with his mother and sisters, he moved to La Crosse.

Dick attended La Crosse Public schools and graduated from Central High School in January, 1948. Three days later he started to work for Trane Co. as a Draftsman in their design department. In January of 1949 he joined the Army. After basic training and Engineering School, he was assigned to the USFA command (United States Forces Austria). He returned to the U.S. in July of 1952. On August 23rd he was honorably discharged from the Army as a Sergeant First Class. He is a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 52 of La Crosse. He returned to Trane Co. where he met Miriam Weber who he later married on Feb. 20, 1954 and they enjoyed 62 years together. He retired from Trane Co. in December 1988 after 40 years. He was a member of the Trane 25 year club. He later went to work for Multistack in West Salem and he worked there for eight years.

Dick took great pride in his woodworking. He also enjoyed landscaping and gardening, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter Debra Volten, of La Crosse, WI; two sons, Jeff Volten, of La Crosse, and Rick (Janna) Volten of Viroqua, WI. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Nikki (Jeff) Horihan, Eric (Jenny) Bahr, Anna (Jamie) Johnson, Elizabeth, Alex, and Matthew Volten, Kaitlin and Rebecca Volten; seven great grandchildren, Jack, Preston, and William Horihan, Aleah Bahr and Jordynn Bahr, and Christopher and Lilly Johnson; and one sister, Terri (David) Faas of Bellbrook, OH.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Lucille King of St. Cloud, Fla., Arlyne Griffin of Dallas, TX, and Mary Tracy of Onalaska, Wis., and an infant grandson, Christopher Bahr, of La Crescent, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Mary Mother of the Church Parish, 2006 Weston St., La Crosse, WI. Rev. Brian D. Konopa will officiate with entombment to be held in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery, with Military Honors performed by the Roy L. Vingers, American Legion Post No. 52. Friends and family may call from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, January 25, 2016 at Blaschke & Schneider Funeral Homes, 1501 West Ave. South, La Crosse, Wis., with a rosary to be held at 4:00 PM. Friends and family may also call from 9:30 AM until the time of Mass at Church on Tuesday.
