David W. Olson

David, Dave, Coach Ole was born on September 12, 1945, to Adolph and Ida Olson. He passed away on Monday, May 19.

He was preceded in death by his parents Adolph and Ida Olson (Nelson), Brother Leonard (Beatrice) and sister Audrey.

Dave is survived by his brothers Arthur (Beverly) and Scott (Betsy), sister Margie (Doug Bendel), wife Sue Olson (Medinger), sons Derek (Melyssa) and Travis (Cassie) and his grandchildren Billy, Matthew, Laurel and Robin. He is also survived by his in-laws whom he considered brothers and sisters: Sandy and Mike Hammes, John and Dee Medinger, Daniel and Patti Medinger, Linda Bechly, Sven and Kristi Medinger, Pete and Lisa Medinger, Mary and Joe Kulmaczewski: Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Dave grew up on the home farm in Coon Valley and graduated from Westby in 1963. He then attended La Crosse State University where he met Sue Medinger. They were married on June 3, 1967. Dave started teaching and coaching in 1967, and kept on for 50 years. Coach Ole coached track and cross country and taught math to several generations at Logan Middle and High schools. He also taught in Koyuk Alaska, as well as UW La Crosse. He loved coaching and his athletes. Dave was the family handyman, helping so many with many remodelings and additions. Dave loved his land and garden and enjoyed sharing many pumpkins with everyone.

His care for others extended to being an organ donor.

David’s memorial will be at Blaschke & Schneider’s Funeral Home at 1501 West Ave S, La Crosse, WI from 11am-2pm Sunday June 1, 2025, with a remembrance ceremony at 1pm.
