John Herbert Kass, 85, of La Crosse died Monday, Oct. 20, 2014, at Mayo Health System, La Crosse.

He was born Jan. 10, 1929, in Milwaukee, to John W. and Mae Kass. He graduated from Milwaukee Washington High School in January 1948, and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

John married Myra J. Sedletzeck in Terre Haute, Indiana on Oct. 12, 1957. Together they raised three children and lived in Kalamazoo, MI, Tolono, IL and Oconomowoc, WI before settling in Onalaska.

After serving in the military, John was a pilot for the Kimberly-Clark Corporation for two years before working as an Air Traffic Controller for 38 years until his retirement in 1987.

John loved flying and enjoyed telling stories from his days as a pilot. He was also an avid photographer.

John is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Myra; their three children, Katherine of Kalamazoo, John J. of Onalaska, Marilyn (Todd) Wilder of La Crosse; his four grandchildren, Stephanie and Austin Kass and Leah and Ryan Wilder, all of La Crosse. John is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Virginia and Delores.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, October 24, 2014, in St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral, 530 Main St., La Crosse, Wis. Msgr. Charles Stoetzel will officiate. Family and friends may call from 9:30 AM until the time of Mass in the Church on Friday. Burial will follow mass immediately at Oak Grove Cemetery with Military rites to be provided by the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52.
