DUNCAN, Leon A.

Leon A. Duncan, 94 of La Crosse, WI, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014, in Benedictine Manor, La Crosse, WI.
He was born in Kranzberg, SD on May 8, 1920. Leon was united in marriage to Jane G. Larson on Feb. 14, 1942 while he was stationed in Alexandria, LA. He graduated from Aquinas High School, Class of 1938. Leon joined the 32nd Red Arrow Division, Battery A, 120th Field Artillery division of the National Guard in the US Army in 1939. He served during WWII from 1941 to 1945 mostly in New Guinea, in the South Pacific Islands, until he was honorably discharged Oct. 1, 1945. Leon was a semi-truck driver for over 40 years.  He retired in 1982 from Erickson Bakery after 31 years as a semi-truck driver where he was able to take his grandchildren along on his routes.  Leon was a self taught handyman that could figure out how to fix anything. Leon even educated himself on how to build his own house by going to the library and researching how to books.  He completed building his own home in 1971 where he lived until 2009 and then moved to SpringBrook Assisted Living until the time of his death.
Leon was a long time Northsider.  He was always willing to help with his time and talents at St. James the Less Catholic Church, family and neighbors.  He enjoyed spending time with his wife of 61 years as a loving husband. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed his large garden, giving away many tomatoes and tinkering in his garage. Leon had the privilege of taking the Freedom Honor Flight to Washington D.C., accompanied by his son, Ted, in May 2011.
Leon is survived by one son, Ted (Mary Ann) of Onalaska, WI, daughter-in-law, Carolyn of West Salem, WI; four grandchildren, Lynne (Scott) Lintelman, Todd, Michael and Kelly Duncan; two great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and Allison Lintelman; extended family of nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by us all.
He was proceeded in death by his wife, Jane on Dec 26, 2003, one son, Richard on Jan. 18, 2005, his two brothers Joe and George (Bernice), sister Laura (Daniel) Stone and sister-in-law Elaine Jones.
A funeral Mass will be held 11:00 AM, on Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, in St. James the Less Catholic Church, 1032 Caledonia St., La Crosse, WI. Msgr. Roger Scheckel will officiate with entombment and military rites by the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52, in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park, La Crosse, WI. Friends and family may call from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015,  at Blaschke & Schneider Funeral Home Nelson Chapel, 1007 Caledonia St., La Crosse, WI. with the rosary to be said at 6:30 PM. Family and friends may also call from 10:00 AM until the time of Mass on Friday.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to St. James the Less Catholic Church, The Boys and Girls Club of La Crosse or to memorials of your choice.
