Len entered the army soon after high school and served as medic in South Korea and in various locations in the United States.

Len graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1975 and began work as social worker in LaCrosse County. Throughout his work life he held various positions that allowed him to help others. He saw helping others through sports was his mission in life. He was part of the AmeriCorps project in Clarksdale, Mississippi and sponsored a team from that area to play in the stars of tomorrow tournament in LaCrosse. Leonard also worked to organize the Chileda Classic Run which raised funds for the Chileda Foundation.

Later in life Leonard devoted his time to coaching young people in the LaCrosse area to help them develop their athletic skills. An annual baseball tournament was named for him as a result of his hard work and dedication to young people. Lenny embodied the spirit of joy in helping others and for this he was awarded the Jefferson award for volunteers.

Lenny was a walking encyclopedia of sports trivia and could provide a wealth of facts whenever asked. Len was a fan of almost all sports. In baseball, Mickey Mantle was his favorite athlete, and following the Milwaukee Brewers was part of his routine later in life. He grew up during the glory years of the Green Bay Packers and remained a loyal fan. He often attended the Drake relays as he retained affection for the sport in which loved in high school.

Len is preceded in death by his mother Erin, and father Len. He is survived by his sister, Nancy Rand (Dan) and brothers, Dan (Karen) and Dave (Phyllis) and nieces Erin, Emily and Caroline and nephew Daniel.
