Margaret “Marg” Schaefer, age 89, of La Crosse, WI, died Friday, August 25, 2017 in La Crosse. She was a lifelong resident of La Crosse. She was born to George and Katherina (Schiesser) Schmitt. Marg was married to Bob Schaefer in 1951; they were married for 66 years.
Marg graduated from Viterbo College, was a medical technologist with St Francis Hospital, and then with UW-La Crosse Health Center for over 20 years. She was a cantor at Blessed Sacrament Church and a member of the funeral choir. Marg and Bob learned conversational German and made long lasting friends in class. They enjoyed trips to Germany where Marg spent time with her German family. She enjoyed traveling, music, dancing, baking, and being with friends and family. She had a great memory for names and faces!
Marg is survived by her children, Mary Ann Affeldt (Bruce Twomey), John (Bonnie) Schaefer, Patricia Schaefer-Burris, and three grandchildren, Andrew Schaefer, Sarah Schaefer, and AnnMarie Burris. She is also survived by relatives in Germany.
Her husband, Bob, preceded her in death 8 months ago. Her parents, and half-brother, Franz Schiesser (Anni), also preceded her in death.
Special thanks to Dr. Mary Bassing and to the caring staff at Eagle Crest South, and Gundersen Hospice who made her final years comfortable.
Celebration of Marg’s Life will be at Blessed Sacrament Parish on Saturday, September 23, 2017. The funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM, at Blessed Sacrament Church, 130 Losey Blvd., La Crosse, WI. Family and friends may call at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of Mass. Entombment will follow at the St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum in the Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials to Viterbo University or Aquinas Catholic Schools are preferred rather than flowers.
