Mary A. Grass

September 27, 1949 — October 8, 2017

Mary A. Grass, 68, of La Crosse, WI, died Sunday, October 8, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Health System, Franciscan Healthcare in La Crosse, WI.

She was born in La Crosse on Sept. 27, 1949 to William and Janice (Byers) Horschak.

Mary was a lover of life. A life-long resident of La Crosse, she made it her business to get to know everyone she crossed paths with. Absolutely everyone. You could always find her chatting and joking with anyone who cared to join in. Most recently you would find her working in the dining hall at UW-L, no doubt regaling all the fresh-faced college students with stories and doling out advice.

She was active with Central High School events, especially her class of 1967. This year marked their 50th class reunion. Mary was the primary organizer for this event, planning activities, booking venues, and making flower corsages. She loved crafting. Her short-lived store in downtown La Crosse, Mag’s Raintree Cottage, was one of the big joys in her life.

Always the life of the party, she loved to play cards at the Hideaway in Chaseburg on Thursday afternoons and bring treats to her pals. She loved the Packers, and sports in general, and often rooted for the teams of her friends’ grandchildren.

She adored her two daughters and five grandchildren. The walls of her home were covered with photographs of her loved ones.

She offered kindness to others, especially when they were in need. She was known for bringing pots of soup over when someone was sick. She nearly always thought of others before herself.

She is survived by two daughters; Amy (Cheyenne) Montgomery of Portland, Oregon, and Angie (Matt) Mullins of Duncan, South Carolina, five grandchildren, Zoe Mullins, Matthew Mullins Jr., Sayer Glasgow, Guthrie Glasgow, and Simone Glasgow, three brothers; William “Bill”, Steven, and Larry Horschak.

In regards to all competition between Mary and her best friend Peggy, jacks and jump rope have been officially bequeathed to Peggy. May she carry them with love and honor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Janice (Byers) Horschak, Buddy Holly, and Elvis Presley. Buddy and Elvis have been waiting patiently for her in the Bahamas with an ice-cold Mike’s Hard Cranberry Lemonade.
