Maxine Kane (Heintz)

December 23, 1931 — November 30, 2016

Maxine M. Kane, 84, of La Crosse, Wisconsin passed away peacefully on Wednesday November 30, 2016, with her family at her side. Maxine was born December 23, 1931 in La Crosse to Michael and Marion (Zinzer) Heintz.

Maxine was raised by her mother and father on the north side of La Crosse. She graduated from La Crosse Aquinas high school in 1949. She briefly worked in Minneapolis, MN before returning to La Crosse.  In 1950, she met the love of her life, Norman J. Kane. Her courtship with Norm was briefly interrupted by his two year Army service commitment to defend our country in the Korean War.

Maxine continued her courtship with Norm upon his return from the service in 1953. Shortly thereafter, in 1954, Maxine married Norm and began raising a family of five boys. Maxine took great pride in raising the boys and was always their number 1 fan. She was everything any boy could ever want in a mom. She was the lover and the disciplinarian of all six boys including Norm. Norm had his family business to care for and Mom did the rest. No easy chore to raise five boys born in a seven year period from November of 1954 to May of 1962. But she always did it with a smile on her face. She was meant to be a Mom and loved us all greatly. Mom ran the ship and there was never any doubt.

Maxine’s hobbies included drawing and painting, reading, playing cards, shopping and socializing with her friends. But her favorite thing to do was dance with her husband. They started dancing at the Avalon in La Crosse in 1950 and never really stopped. Norm and Max spent their winters in Mesa,  Arizona. Many of their friends and relatives followed their lead.

Max and Norm were devout Catholics and members of Mary, Mother of Church Parish. They were lifetime members of numerous clubs and organizations including the Moose Lodge (Charter Member), Eagles, Knights of Columbus and Elks Clubs. She also was a member, through Norm, of the American Legion and the VFW.

Maxine and Norm’s love for each other never waned. This was most recently evidenced by Norm’s devotion to Maxine during her courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He would show up every day to visit her in assisted living facilities and bring a smile to her face, many times with her not even knowing who it was she was smiling to. It was a beautiful thing to see.

Maxine is survived by her five children Donald Kane (Deb), Richard Kane, Larry Kane (Karri), John Kane (Cheri), Jeffrey Kane; six grandchildren Jerry, Jenelle (Donnie Smith), Ryan, Connor,  Kendall (godson) and Miranda; two great grandchildren Aiden and Bryce; one sister Shirley Hill; one brother-in-law, Harry Strittmater; sisters-in-law, Louise Heintz and Donna Mae Blank; and countless relatives and friends.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Norm; her parents; her brother Florian and Sisters Natalie, Vivian and Diane; father and mother-in-law, Donald and Agnes Kane; brother and sisters-in-law, Clem Iverson, Elmo and Elmer Hill, LeRoy Lachman and Hank Blank.

The Kane family extends their deepest gratitude to the entire Staff of both The Hearten House and Bethany Riverside.

Maxine was truly a great wife and mother, always putting everyone first over her own wishes. She will be greatly missed. Her warm smile and soft voice will live through all those she touched.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, December 5, 2016, at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish, 2006 Weston St., La Crosse, WI. Rev. Brian D. Konopa will officiate with burial to be held in Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends may visit from 9:00 AM until the time of Mass at Church on Monday.

May the road rise up to meet you … And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
