Patrick James Vaughn

La Crosse

Patrick James Vaughn (Pat) died peacefully at the age of 82 on May 26th at his residence, Benedictine Living Community. Pat was born June 18, 1943, to Alvin (Mickey) and Lucille Vaughn in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the fourth of five children. When he was 2 years old, Pat contracted the first known case of La Crosse encephalitis, which resulted in both physical and mental impairment. Despite these challenges, Pat enjoyed a meaningful and successful life, fishing, doing puzzles, assembling models and living independently until he broke his hip a year ago. Up to that time, he did all his own laundry, cleaning and cooking, and proudest of managing his own finances. More recently, he enjoyed watching movies, especially anything with Chuck Norris.

Pat was employed and volunteered in multiple settings throughout his life, earning him numerous awards and recognition, including Riverfront's Leo Butler Achievement Award for his personal achievements, service and giving to others. In his later years, he could be found most days taking his mobility scooter up to Kwik Trip for a good cup of coffee and a visit with his friends and the staff. Friends and family will always remember him for his loving and positive personality. Pat had a sweet disposition, though he did like to have things done his way. If Pat could speak to us now, he'd be sure to say, as he always did, "We're all doing fine up here!"

He is survived by his sisters Dawn (Anderson), Mary (Nolop) and Letty (Vaughn), his brother Mike (Vaughn) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. A special thank you to his Aptive caretakers, the Benedictine staff, all his friends, especially Kenny, his "Big Buddy" Harry, and his devoted niece Terri.

A service honoring Pat will be held at 1 p.m. on his birthday, June 18th, in the chapel at Oak Grove Cemetery.
