Steven Murphy

Steven Charles Murphy, 69, passed away peacefully at home on December 28, 2025, after a short battle with ALS. He was born on February 6, 1956, and grew up in La Crescent, Minnesota, later making his home across the river in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

In his younger years, he loved being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, and many of his favorite stories came from those days. As life changed and the years went on, some of his greatest joys were simple moments with his grandchildren - taking them to local high school baseball games, going to the playground, and calling to tell them when the best cartoons were on. One of his happiest recent memories was passing along his tackle boxes and his love of fishing to his grandsons.

Steve enjoyed many things throughout his life, including hunting, fishing, turkey hunting, scuba diving, Boy Scouts, watching football, gardening, coaching softball, and laughing along with his favorite comedies. He cared deeply for his family and friends. Even when time or distance made staying in touch harder, he held people close in his heart. Many will remember him through the work and friendships he made during his years at La Crosse Footwear, where he worked for 22 years; La Crosse Brewery for 3 years; and McKesson for 12 years, where he later retired.

He is survived by his partner of 27 years, Dawn Bingham; his son Michael Murphy (Angie) and grandchildren Marissa and Maggie; his daughter Molly Vandeleest (Matt) and grandchildren Isaiah, Asher, Micah, and Haddie; Dawn's sons David Bingham and children Josey and Samson; Kyle Bingham (Lauren) and son Jack; his brother Michael Murphy; and extended family and friends who loved him.

He was predeceased by his mother Patricia (Bill) Busch, his father Charles Murphy, his beloved dogs Rocky and Happy, and other beloved family members.

At Steve's request, no formal services will be held; a private family gathering will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you remember Steve in your own way.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
