SPEARS, Susan C.

Susan C. Spears, 78, of La Crosse, died Tuesday, March 21, 2017, in the Hillview Healthcare Center, La Crosse, WI surrounded by family. She was born in La Crosse, WI on August 27, 1938, to Lynn and Mary (De Wolf) Newcomb. She married her high school sweetheart David J. Spears on Oct. 11, 1958, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in La Crosse.

Sue retired from First Federal Savings Bank in 2005. Prior to that she and David owned and operated Huffman Trucking and Storage for 11 years. She was a member of the Red Hat Club, the Hill and Valley Garden Club, and various other groups. She enjoyed her flower gardens, canning, and bus trips to the theatre. She was a wonderful seamstress, and one of her passions was creating “grammy jammies” for all of her grandchildren each Christmas season. She also knitted scarves and mittens, not only for her children and grandchildren, but also to help fill donation trees throughout the city. Susan was a proud supporter of her children and grandchildren in all of their endeavors. She enjoyed spring trips to Arizona with her daughter Mary Kay, traveling with family and friends, playing with her grandchildren, but most of all, dancing with David. She will be remembered lovingly as a friend, mother, and grandmother who never stopped giving from the kindness of her heart.

She is survived by her children; three sons, Mark (Mary, Sean & Nicole) of Green Bay, WI, Michael (Diana, Brittany, Brooke & Briana) of Chandler, AZ, Matt (Bobbi, Miranda & Benjamin) of Onalaska; two daughters, Mary Kay (Joseph, Joseph Jr (JJ) & Sheridan) of La Crosse, and Marlene (Jerry, Martin, Mitchell & Mandy) Starch-Dwyer; brothers, Carl (Sue) Newcomb, Tom (Jackie) Newcomb, Jeff, Keith, and Paul; sisters, Michelle (Ed) Leffler, Sharon (John) Kiesling, and Laurie Newcomb. She was preceded in death by her husband David J. Spears on July 18, 2001, and her parents.

The Spears family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Wayne Bottner and the entire staff of the Hematology Department at Gundersen for their kind and thoughtful care of Susan throughout her journey.
